Slain in the Spirit

There term or phrase "slain in the spirit" is not in the bible. The word "slain" is used many times but it always refers to someone being killed..

What you see on television is an outgrowth of the Charismatic movement which emphasis each believer have some kind of experience to document the sincerity of their faith. Sometimes the experiences involve "speaking in tongues" and sometimes it involves other demonstrations such as being "slain in the spirit." There is a danger in this as it caused many to deviate from the pure teachings of the bible. Faith, obedience and service are the indicators of a sincere belief in God. Personal experiences such as the so called "slain in the spirit" experience are real at the moment for the participants but are not supported in scripture.

Certainly, as God’s creation, I am in no position to question what God does. Neither am I in any position to say what God can and cannot do. The only benchmark that God has given us is the Scriptures. Based upon what I have read in the Scripture, I can look at something and judge whether or not it is likely that God would do something, but I do not believe that that is any limitation on what He may chose to do. In my experience, and from my reading of the Scripture, I believe that there God would not do things that would contradict His word.

When we see Jesus pray for someone, did someone have to stand behind them to catch them? Do we see any of the disciples slapping someone on the forehead as they fall backwards or blowing on them when they prayed? We don't need to be slain in the Spirit but cut by the very word of God. Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

  • Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

  • Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

I John 4:1 provides this command: "Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world." Most Christians are aware that cults or New Age sects are backed by false prophets and evil spirits. However, too many Christians are unwilling to honestly assess the spirit behind their own assembly or favorite televangelist.

Many have failed to test the spirits and have been duped into teaching twisted doctrines of seducing spirits. Other teachers have knowingly become false prophets or sold themselves into immoral bondage. Sadly, many deceived Christians, when they discover their error, refuse to admit their mistake. Pride and ignorance hinder many Christians from testing the spirits today, especially concerning contemporary Toronto Blessing and other "slain in the spirit" movement.

Most of the times in the bible when people fell on their backs was not as a blessing but as a judgment from God. Please just read this two of verses at the bottom and examine yourselves. I used to be in a church that practiced "slain in the spirit" and I am telling you from my own experience that it is an emotional thing. I think that the faith movement is getting deeper and deeper into the world of the cults and that is very sad because I have many dear loved ones in those movements.

As we will see, in the Bible, falling backward is always associated with some type of judgment.

  • (1 Sam 4:18 KJV) And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

  • (John 18:6 KJV) As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

These are two actual, historical events which show us that falling backward is a judgment.

God bless and remember if the word of God does not confirm it, it is not of God. The only revelation we need is the Word of God. God has revealed everything a Christian needs in the Word of God. Don’t try to experience God by falling back but seek God in His mighty Word.
